Heat Interface Unit Types: Direct & Indirect

HIUs differ by heating circuit arrangement, hot-water duty and control method. Direct and indirect describe hydraulic separation; mechanical and electronic describe controls; heating-only and combined describe which services the unit provides.

    Direct vs indirect heating

A direct heat interface unit admits primary network water into the dwelling's own heating circuit under valve control, without an exchanger between the two. An indirect unit uses a plate heat exchanger to transfer heat into a separate secondary heating circuit, keeping network water out of the dwelling pipework. Both approaches are used across UK schemes, and the choice is normally made by the building's original design, not something a resident selects.

The practical difference shows up in what can go wrong: a direct system is more exposed to network-side debris or pressure variation reaching the dwelling circuit directly, while an indirect system adds an exchanger, and possibly a pump and expansion vessel, as additional components that can themselves need attention.

Heating-only vs combined heating and hot water

Some heat interface units handle space heating only, with domestic hot water produced some other way in the building, such as a separate cylinder arrangement. Combined units include a dedicated domestic hot-water exchanger; indirect heating normally adds a separate heating exchanger, while direct heating does not require that second plate. A heating-only unit should not be diagnosed or serviced as if it also makes hot water — the fault categories and components differ.

Identifying which category applies comes from the model documentation or the building's as-installed records, not from guessing based on symptoms.

    Mechanical (self-acting) vs electronic controls

Self-acting controls use thermostatic or pressure-responsive mechanisms to regulate flow without a separate electronic controller, reacting directly to a physical change in temperature or pressure. Electronic controls use sensors feeding a controller that drives motorised actuators, and can offer more configurable logic, such as prioritisation between heating and hot water.

Neither category is inherently newer or better; many schemes use a mix depending on the manufacturer and the era of installation. An electronic controller does not by itself mean the unit reports data to a remote monitoring system — some installations are standalone, others are networked, and this depends on the specific installation rather than the control type.

Exchanger construction: brazed and gasketed plate

Domestic hot-water exchangers in heat interface units are most commonly brazed plate units, permanently joined and not designed to be opened for mechanical cleaning. Some larger or specific installations use gasketed plate exchangers, which can be dismantled for inspection and cleaning. The approach to descaling or flushing differs between the two, and the cleaning chemistry considered suitable for one construction is not automatically suitable for the other.

Which construction is fitted, along with the plate material and any manufacturer guidance on approved cleaning methods, needs to be established from the unit's own documentation before any chemical treatment is carried out.

Why model identification matters before any work

Because direct/indirect, heating-only/combined, mechanical/electronic and exchanger construction can combine in different ways across manufacturers, two units that look alike from the outside can require entirely different diagnostic and repair approaches. Confirming the manufacturer, model and serial number is the starting point for any meaningful assessment, repair plan or parts order.

    Common Questions

How do I know if my HIU is direct or indirect?

This is confirmed from the model's hydraulic drawing or manufacturer documentation rather than by appearance. An indirect unit may show a secondary pressure gauge or expansion vessel, but their absence does not reliably confirm a direct arrangement without checking the actual design.

Does an electronic HIU mean it can be controlled remotely?

Not necessarily. Electronic control refers to how the unit regulates itself internally using sensors and a controller. Whether that controller also connects to a remote monitoring or building management system depends on the specific installation, not the control type alone.

What is the difference between a brazed and gasketed plate exchanger?

A brazed plate exchanger is permanently joined and not intended to be opened for mechanical cleaning, so maintenance relies on flushing or chemical treatment suited to that construction. A gasketed plate exchanger can be dismantled for direct inspection and cleaning of the plates, which some larger installations use instead.

Can one HIU type be converted to another?

Changing a unit's fundamental type — for example direct to indirect, or heating-only to combined — is a design change rather than a repair, and would involve replacing the unit with one of a different configuration rather than modifying the existing one.

Does type affect how servicing is carried out?

Yes. The checks relevant to a direct unit differ from those for an indirect one with a secondary pump and vessel, and a combined unit has a hot-water exchanger to assess that a heating-only unit does not have. Servicing scope follows the installed type and manufacturer instructions.
